“Are you sure this is okay?” Mia asks, her brows pressing together in doubt. Her gaze follows the sushi chef as he places a tray filled with salmon sashimi in front of us. The man bows before stepping away, back to his station, where he focuses on rolling sushi.

“Of course it is,” I tell her, cleaning my hands with a napkin before I pluck a nigiri from another tray. I bring it to my mouth and chew on the best fish I could find in town. There’s nothing like good food. If there’s something I appreciate spending my money on, it’s good food. I wash it down with a sip of water, then meet Mia’s worried gaze. “What’s wrong? You said you enjoyed sushi.”

“I do...” And she slides a glance at the chef. “I thought we were going to a restaurant, though. Not having a private chef in your dining room.”

“Only the best for you.”

Her cheeks go pink and she smiles, but I can tell she’s embarrassed. Maybe I went too hot, too fast… Again. I can’t help it. This woman makes me want to be a better man. She makes me want to give her everything in my reach, make her feel comfortable and safe. And I can see life hasn’t treated her well. I have to get her used to it.

God, I’m going to spoil this woman rotten. She’ll have everything she ever needs, every little whim and desire. Whatever it takes to see her smile.

And what she needs right now is a distraction. I ask her about her portfolio and her sewing. She tells me all about how much she loves doing it, and how she creates new clothes in her spare time. I devour her tales and watch her smile as she tells me about her history. Seeing her this happy fills me with pride. Mia eats the sushi, humming in delight at the fresh salmon on her tongue, and the sound never fails to give me a new erection.

It’s just permanent now. I’ll have to get used to it. She makes my blood boil, and I have no way around it. This woman is my obsession, and I’ll never tire of her.

The chef leaves when I tell him we’re done. Mia drinks from her favorite tea, the one I saw her drinking the first time we met. She smiles at me when I serve her. We keep chatting, and I keep asking more questions about her past. She seems hesitant to tell me about a part of her life, a part where she just says she was working hard and that’s all. Something tells me there’s more to it. A memory that hurts her, that she doesn’t like to share. And it’s alright. I would force nothing out of her.

Mia catches her breath, a smile playing on the corner of her lips. “You’re a good listener, Grayson,” she says, her voice thick as she gazes at me. Mia releases a sigh, slumping against the chair. “I didn’t know there were men interested in anything other than themselves out there.
